This February 8, Scouting America celebrates a milestone — 115 years of shaping young lives through character development, leadership training, and outdoor adventure. This anniversary is especially significant as the organization embraces its new name, Scouting America, reaffirming its commitment to preparing young people for a lifetime of ethical decision-making and service.
For over a century, Scouting America has been a cornerstone of youth development, providing millions of young people with the skills and experiences necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. From the thrill of a first camping trip to the challenge of earning Eagle Scout rank, the Scouting journey is filled with moments that create confidence and resilience.
Scouting’s Enduring Impact
Since its founding in 1910, more than 130 million Americans have taken part in Scouting, learning invaluable life lessons along the way. Today, over a million youth participate in Scouting programs nationwide, supported by nearly half a million dedicated volunteers.
“Scouting America has helped instill timeless values for multiple generations of Americans,” said Roger Krone, president and CEO of Scouting America. “In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, the values and skills instilled by Scouting are more critical than ever. As we celebrate 115 years of service to our nation, we are reaffirming our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment where young people can develop these essential qualities.”
A Celebration Across the Nation
Scouting America’s 115th birthday will be commemorated with celebrations across the country, including landmark lightings in red, white, and blue. Iconic sites such as Niagara Falls, the Pennsylvania State Capitol, and the Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis will be illuminated in honor of this historic occasion.
Scouts and supporters nationwide are encouraged to share their Scouting memories on social media using @scouting.america on TikTok and @boyscoutsofamerica on Instagram.
Additionally, Good Morning America and the Associated Press will feature Scouting America’s anniversary, highlighting the lasting impact of the program on youth and communities.
Scouting in the Occoneechee Council
Here in North Carolina, the Occoneechee Council continues to build on this incredible legacy, helping local youth develop leadership skills and a passion for the outdoors. Whether through summer camp adventures at Camp Durant, community service projects, or the lifelong friendships forged in Scouting, our council remains committed to providing young people with the experiences that help them grow into tomorrow’s leaders.
To mark this special occasion, we encourage our local Scouting families to participate in the celebration. Consider sharing your favorite Scouting memories on social media, reaching out to local media to highlight the impact of Scouting in our community, or even lighting up a local landmark in honor of Scouting America’s 115th birthday.
Our annual Eagle Banquet will happen Feb. 8, 2025. We’ll celebrate the achievements of 329 Eagle Scouts in our Class of 2024, as well as 115 years of Scouting in the U.S.
