Alumnus of the Year

Celebrating Keith Burns: 2024 Council Alumnus of the Year

On Thursday, January 27, at the Council Annual Business Meeting, the Occoneechee Council proudly presented Keith Burns with the 2024 Council Alumnus of the Year Award. As the founder and leader of the Triangle Eagle Scout Association, Keith has been a dedicated advocate for Scouting in the Triangle area, creating lasting connections among Eagle Scouts and strengthening the Scouting community.

A Legacy of Leadership

Keith founded the Triangle Eagle Scout Association in 2011, organizing networking breakfasts and events that have brought together Eagle Scouts from across the region. These gatherings have not only fostered camaraderie but have also played a significant role in raising millions of dollars to support local Scouting programs.

Beyond his work with the association, Keith has demonstrated steadfast leadership within the Occoneechee Council. He served as District Chair from 2012-2013 and has been an integral part of Friends of Scouting (FOS) Luncheon Committees, chairing the 2022 luncheon—one of the council’s key fundraising events.

Service Beyond Scouting

Keith’s dedication to service extends beyond Scouting. A graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law, Keith has spent over 25 years assisting companies in real estate, economic development, and public-private partnerships. His leadership has also benefited numerous non-profit organizations, serving on approximately 12 different boards, including:

  • Hope Valley Country Club
  • Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce
  • Durham County Habitat for Humanity

A Historic Honor

The Council Alumnus of the Year Award is one of three prestigious awards administered by the Council Alumni Committee and is presented annually to one individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to Scouting and the broader community.
