Quick thinking at Camp Davy Crockett
Scouts BSA from Troop 320B in the Cardinal District spent part of their 2025 summer at Camp Davy Crockett in Johnson City, Tenn. at the Sequoyah Council. Like most summer camps, their days were packed with swimming, COPE challenges, aquatics, target sports, and working on merit badges and rank requirements. But in the quiet evenings, a few Scouts set aside time for something special — earning the Camp Davy Crockett Duty to God award.
On one of those evenings, Scouts Keifer Froom, Sawyer Joyce, Witt Moyer, and Phillip Knott had just finished their award requirements and were headed to the camp’s administration building to turn in their paperwork. That’s when they saw trouble.
An adult staff member had fallen out of her vehicle and collapsed on the ground. The Scouts rushed to her side, quickly realizing this was more than a stumble — she was in serious medical distress. Without hesitation, they helped her to the camp’s First Aid building, seated her on a bench, and stayed close, offering comfort and keeping watch.
Moments later, Council Commissioner Scott Fedorchak happened to pass by. Seeing the Scouts with the staff member, he stopped to assess the situation. The Scouts told him they suspected a stroke. After checking her vital signs and neurological responses, Mr. Fedorchak confirmed this was an urgent, life-threatening emergency.
He instructed an adult to call 911, then directed the Scouts to help move the patient inside for further evaluation. They sprang into action — clearing a path, repositioning the examination table, and carefully carrying her inside. While Mr. Fedorchak monitored her worsening condition, the Scouts stayed alert. Noticing his shift to more urgent life-check procedures, two Scouts instinctively retrieved the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from the wall, setting it up in case it was needed.
Fortunately, paramedics arrived before her condition declined further. The Scouts helped the EMS crew transfer her onto the stretcher and into the ambulance. After assessing her, the EMS team made the call for a Life-Flight to the University of Tennessee Hospital for advanced treatment.
Once their part was done, the Scouts quietly returned to their merit badge classes, carrying on with the day. But their actions didn’t go unnoticed. At the final campfire on Friday night, Keifer, Sawyer, Witt, and Phillip received Camp Davy Crockett’s Super Scouter Award — a fitting tribute to their quick thinking, teamwork, and calm under pressure.
That night, they didn’t just live up to the Scout Oath and Law — they embodied it.
